A Spacious Waterfront Retreat in Northwestern Michigan

FISHING:  The Penoyer Creek Channel and the Chain of Lakes (Emerald, Sylvan, Pickerel and Kimball) offer great fishing for large mouthed bass, panfish, northern pike, perch, walleye and catfish. These waterbodies are all directly accessible by boat from The Old Dam Inn. You can even fish right off our docks or the bridge at the edge of the property. And a short drive away are many other lakes - 234 in Newaygo County! To view lake maps CLICK HERE.

Excellent trout and salmon fishing can be found in the nearby Muskegon River (three miles south) and the White River (eight miles north). Here are some useful fishing links:

GOLFING: Several golf courses are available in and around the Newaygo area. CLICK HERE for more information.

HIKING: In addition to taking a leisurely walk right from The Inn around Emerald and Sylvan Lakes (a four mile round-trip) and the Wetland Trail at Camp Newaygo is only five minutes away by foot. Three miles further you can reach the trailhead of the North Country Trail, which meanders for 4,000 miles across the north central U.S.

BOATING/CANOEING/KAYAKING: You can launch your own small watercraft right at The Inn or use the paddleboats, kayak and rowboat we provide. Larger craft can be put-in at the public launch on nearby Pickerel Lake (318 acres), which also provides access to Kimball Lake (153 acres). Canoes, kayaks and floating tubes can be rented just three miles away at Wisner Rents Canoes for boating fun on the Muskegon River. Pontoon boats can be rented for the Muskegon River less than 30 minutes away at River Ridge Landing. Newaygo County is also the host of the U.S.C.A National Canoe and Kayak Championships. With abundant lakes, rivers and streams, the Newaygo area offers great opportunities to get out on the water for recreation and exercise.

SWIMMING: We don't recommend swimming right at The Inn because the bottom is not sandy. There are no public beaches on the four lakes connected to The Inn but you can swim "in" the lakes after reaching them by boat. There are public beaches with playscapes, ice cream parlors and parking in the cities of Newaygo and Fremont (3-8 miles from The Inn).

YOUTH CAMPS: Just across the road from The Old Dam Inn is Camp Newaygo with its beautiful Wetland Trail. Just one mile away is Camp Henry and YMCA Camp Echo is five miles to the northwest. The Inn is a great place to stay while your kids are at camp.

MORE: Newaygo County also offers great opportunities for hunters, snowmobiling and off-road riding.
